The premium retroactively increases wages between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2020 – an increase of 1.6% last year and a 1.4% increase for the current school year. One of the strengths for Manitoba teachers is that we attract very well-trained, highly qualified and highly motivated people to teach in Manitoba`s public schools. Fixed-term contracts can only be used to replace teachers on leave, teachers who terminate their employment during the school year “due to unforeseen circumstances” or “to supplement teaching resources for less than three months,” the new agreement states. If this is not possible, they are asked to minimize their long-term a- and a-mann time. The agreement is a legally binding employment contract concluded through collective bargaining with the employer and the union. We will continue to insist that all employers and public sector unions conduct constructive collective bargaining and that they have no intention of enacting the bill at this stage. Faced with this, the union has requested formulations in the new collective agreement that sets teachers` working hours. The collective agreement between the LRSD and its teachers expired on June 30, 2018.
